Ella Fitzgerald sure knew what she was talking about when she coined the lyrics “Summertime and the livin’ is easy!” The days are longer, the sun warms the soft golden sand, and the sounds of fun and laughter fill the air. Whether you’re here for a few days, or if you’re one of the lucky ones who calls the Golden Isles home, we’ve pulled together a list of activities perfect for families of all ages to enjoy this summer.

Seashells

1.Search for Sea Shells

Find a beach for every mood in the Golden Isles and soon you’ll be spending countless hours combing the beach for intricate sea shells – conchs, angel wings, coquinas, sand dollars and more!

2.Go on a Dolphin Tour

If the Golden Isles had a mascot, it would most likely be a dolphin. These friendly mammals can be found swimming and hunting all throughout our waters. There’s no better way to experience them in their natural habitat than on a guided dolphin tour with one of our trusted local guides:

3.Pack a Picnic

Is there anything more quintessential than a picnic on a sunny summer day? Pack your favorite sandwiches, snacks and drinks, load up the kids and head out for an adventure at one of our picnic areas in the Golden Isles.

4. Find the St. Simons Island Tree Spirits

Hidden among the majestic live oak trees on St. Simons Island are several hand-carved tree spirits. (Think Grandmother Willow from Disney’s Pocahontas.) Take the kids on an island-wide scavenger hunt searching for the carvings and be sure to take pictures along the way!

5.Play a Round of FootGolf

Combine soccer and golf and you get FootGolf, the latest sports craze to sweep the nation. It’s played just like a round of golf, but instead of clubs and a golf ball, players use soccer balls on shortened holes with 21-inch cups. Play on Sea Palms’ 9-hole West Course and you’ll soon be addicted to the hours of fun it provides.

Georgia Sea Turtle Center

6.Visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center

Take a break from the sun and head over to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island to learn everything there is to know about sea turtles. Visit with the recuperating patients or watch a procedure through the observation window.

7.Go on a Ghost Tour

There’s no shortage of haunting tales in the Golden Isles! It doesn’t have to be Halloween to partake in some frightful fun. Tour on foot, trolley or even a hearse with these three guides:

Summer Waves Water Park

8.Beat the Heat at a Waterpark

Splish, splash and slide your way into the cool water at Summer Waves Water Park on Jekyll Island or the Neptune Park Fun Zone on St. Simons Island. Go with the flow in the Lazy River at Summer Waves, or climb the one-of-a-kind water playground at Neptune Park. Just don’t forget sunscreen!

9.Scoot Around on a Segway

Get off the beaten path and discover Jekyll Island like never before on a Segway with Jekyll Island Fun Tours! Tour guides will point out the beautiful flora and fauna as you ride through ancient maritime forests and scenic seaside pathways. Kids need to be at least 14 years of age and weigh no less than 100 pounds to participate.

10.Enjoy a Night Out on the Town

Head to picturesque Historic Downtown Brunswick each month for First Friday, a community-wide celebration attended by locals and visitors alike. Stroll through the quaint boutiques and antique stores and top the night off with dinner at Tispy McSway’s. Their fun environment and kids’ menu makes it a great spot for families.

Neptune Park Fun Zone11.Sink a Hole-in-One at Putt Putt

Engage a friendly competition (parents vs. kids!) on one of two putt putt courses in the Golden Isles. Play under the towering St. Simons Lighthouse at the Neptune Park Fun Zone or take in the calm, coastal breezes at Jekyll Island Miniature Golf.

12.Cast a Line on a Fishing Charter

Our waters are teeming with a menagerie of fish – from tarpon to trout to catfish and everything in between. Charter a trip with one of our experienced guides and start reeling in the good times. Fish on!

13.Sit Beneath the Silver Screen

Hit the concession stand and catch a new release on a rainy day, or if you just need a break from fun in the sun. Movie theatres can be found at Island Cinemas on St. Simons Island or Glynn Place Stadium Cinemas in Brunswick, home of the new Georgia Theatre Xtreme auditorium which features a screen that is 80-feet wide and nearly four stories high!

Capitalize on many family bonding activities on your next visit to the Golden Isles. From lazy afternoons on the beach to thrilling games of FootGolf, there’s something for every family to enjoy. If you’ll be in the Golden Isles for an extended period of time, also be sure to check out the many kids’ summer camps that are available.
