The Coastal Georgia Historical Society will be presenting a lecture series in honor of the 150th birthday of the St. Simons Lighthouse. The programs will also be avaliable via live stream. Register online at coastalgeorgiahistory.org.

The series will begin on Thursday, August 11, with a lecture by author George Black on the epic story of the creation of the national park system, entitled Empire of Shadows: The Founding of Yellowstone National Park.” On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law. Black’s lecture, based on his book, Empire of Shadows, will tell of the conquest of Yellowstone, Wyoming, a landscape uninhabited, inaccessible, and shrouded in myth in the aftermath of the Civil War.
