Members of the Jekyll Island Arts Association come to the Golden Isles from various parts of the country to study, appreciate, and create art. Their creations of paintings, pottery, sculpture, quilts, weavings, woodworks, books, photographs, and everything-in-between are offered at the Merry Artists Market beginning Nov. 29 through Dec. 30 at Goodyear Cottage, Jekyll Island. Aside from special holiday events, regular hours are weekdays from Noon to 4 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices for the one-of-a-kind pieces of art range from $5 to $250.
Holiday festivities on Jekyll Island begin at 8 am on Nov. 29 when the Merry Artists join the Pier Road Pajama Party to serve refreshments and offer three drawings of original art from 8 to 11 am at Goodyear Cottage. In addition, artist Cathy Beckmann will be present to demonstrate the creation of her Christmas ornaments from 8-12 pm and 4-8 pm.
Featured artist events continue at Goodyear Cottage throughout the holiday season. A painting demonstration by Lexie Moye takes place on Nov. 30 from 12-4 pm, followed by a demonstration of the Floor and Rigid Heddle Looms by the Cottage Weavers Guild on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 from 10 am-4 pm.
The Needlework Group demonstrates handiwork skills on Dec. 4 from 12-4 pm. The Pottery Guild offers tours of Goodyear Pottery and a pottery wheel demonstration from 12-4 pm on Dec. 5. Artist Renee Mitchell creates jewelry and origami holiday table décor from 12-4 pm on Dec. 6.
Local author Pam Bauer Mueller is available on Dec. 7 from 11 am-1 pm and 4-7 pm to sign her latest book, Fly, Fly Away. On Dec. 8 Arline Maxon demonstrates slate and sand dollar painting from 12-4 pm, and Mike and Joy Cook play the Native American flute from 1-3 pm on Dec. 9.
Georgia bird expert Lydia Thompson demonstrates sketching and discusses printmaking from 12-4 pm on Dec. 11. The Pottery Guild returns with a hand-building clay demo from 12-4 pm on Dec. 14, while Helen Chouinard demonstrates paper quilling from 12-2 pm.
The Woodworkers Group offers a woodturning demo from 10-4 pm on Dec. 15. Artist Jackie Becker demonstrates her bead weaving skills on Dec. 17 from 1-3 pm. Mike and Joy Cook return on Dec. 18 to play the Native American flue from 2-4 pm.
To complete the season of special Merry Artists programs, the Jekyll Island Singers will offer a short program of holiday music at 2 pm. on Dec. 20.
