Soul Street Dance

Be prepared to be amazed as Soul Street Dance takes the Ritz Theatre stage on October 20, 2018 at 8 pm. Presented by Golden Isles Arts & Humanities, the company will bring their unique mix of street dance in Breakin' Backward featuring an eclectic blend of movement styles stet to a diverse and sometimes surprising soundtrack.

Soul Street Dance, from Houston, Texas, is unique for their way of incorporating different styles of street dance. The Soul Street style incorporates martial arts moves with break dancing, and mixes hip-hop with gravity-defying ballet. The company pushes the artistic boundaries in street dance while maintaining the true essence of the culture. In Breakin' Backward, bustin' moves will take on decades past as four male dancers perform their special contemporary mix of choreography to the popular music of the decades. "There's a piece for everyone in this show" says Soul Street co-founder Javier Garcia. "We're dancing to the best music from each decade... from the Charleston to hip hop." Musical selections include Leonard Bernstein, James Brown, Elvis Presley, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, and more. Appropriate for all ages, this show is certain to entertain and amaze with its creativity and technical precision.

This self-taught street crew was founded by Javier Garcia and Rock Williams. Cedric D. Hicks and Roy Ramirez later joined, adding their own flair to the group. These self-taught artists began their careers as at-risk youth performing hip-hop dance on the streets. In 1996 they caught the attention of the artistic director for Fly Dance Company and became its principal dancers. Their national and international touring has included venues ranging from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Lincoln Center in New York City, and Jacob's Pillow in western Massachusetts, to the 2006 NBA all-star game, Lyrist Lounge Monster Tour featuring Killer Mike and Young Bloodz, and Chubby Checker.
