John Gilbert Nature Trail

This beautiful land, named Frederica Marsh, was generously donated to the St. Simons Land Trust in 2000 by Dorothy Gilbert. One of its most treasured features is the magnificent live oak in the center of the property, which Mrs. Gilbert affectionately named “John’s Oak” in honor of her late husband John Gilbert. The John Gilbert Trail is the Land Trust’s first interpretive trail. The trail is a natural gem right in the heart of St. Simons Island. As you pass through the four wooded areas, you see the climax maritime forest transition into the marsh border. From this edge there are several points at which you may rest and view the marsh. Look for interpretive signs to learn about the history of the land, the roles of our native vegetation, and the birds and animals that also visit this land. Learn more about the Golden Isles' nature and wildlife. Please respect the environment by leaving each area you visit as you found it. Whether you spend time relaxing and playing on the beach or hiking a nature trail, 'pack out what you packed in'. Thank you for helping us to keep the Golden Isles beautiful! Open daily, sunrise to sunset.
